During the first week of last June, I had the opportunity to attend BIO 2018. While I was there, I noticed a worrying trend that we all need to be aware of.
During sessions, I went to three fireside chats, a couple panel discussions, and some other talks. It was at one of the fireside chats where this trend first became apparent. The moderator asked three executives from large pharmaceutical companies how they were going to hire and develop talent to keep up with the new, innovative technologies emerging in the pharmaceutical industry. Two of the executives ignored the question, while the third gave a basic throwaway answer.
In the panel discussions, this same topic was addressed once more, and I asked those panels if it was something people were talking about at the executive level. Were they managing or developing strategies to deal with the impending crisis of 10,000 people retiring a day and marrying those strategies to the progression of technology?
The answer I got was a resounding “no.” This is a problem, and it will only turn into a bigger problem as we approach 2030.
